Culinary Team Alberta won two gold medals and just missed out on a third at the Expogast Culinary World Cup, held November 18 – 22, 2006 in Luxembourg. Only four-and-a-half points separated them from a first-place finish. Most of the chefs on this year’s team had never competed internationally before, but they out-performed established regional teams to win fourth place at this top-flight international competition.
“This was our first competition as a new team and everyone did exceptionally well,” says Team Manager Vinod Varshney. “The chefs stayed calm, worked together and coped with competition pressures like seasoned pros. We finished near the top in overall standings and earned high commendation from both judges and fellow competitors.”
“It was a very honourable finish, given the standard of competition,” adds Team Business Manager Simon Smotkowicz, who was also a judge at the Expogast competition. “Give these chefs time and experience, and Alberta will have another world champion team.”
Alberta chefs also won medals in individual categories: Gold for Lloyd Winters, The Rimrock Inn, Banff, and Silver for Scott Ards, Shaw Conference Centre, Edmonton.
